Day 83 Leland to Fayette Friday August 10, 2018

The clear sky of the afternoon stayed around until morning and was with us until a thunderstorm developed in the late afternoon- but move north of us.  Wind was still in the early morning and light until we made Fayette. Temperatures were lower 60s at daybreak and in the mid 70s from midday on. Wonderful day to cross the pond.

Can you say long day?  Well we had a fairly long day and a good one at that.

We crossed Lake Michigan and went back to being Uppers (say with long U) instead of Trolls.  "What are you talking about?" Well, when in the Soo we learned that the folks on the upper peninsula of Michigan refer to themselves as Uppers and those down from the Mackinac Bridge as Trolls - those lower life folks that live under the bridge (on the map that is). And if you look at the map Leland is in Troll land and Fayette is in Upper land.

The ride across was perfect. Sun - little wind - mild temps - and calm seas. Wonderful

Making coffee before the start of our voyage. Notice the amount of light coming in the window.

There was fog to start - but the sun did a fine job of dispelling it.

North Manitou Island - A National park - for hiking and camping - boat goes out of Leland. About six miles out into the lake.

The NOAA weather and sea conditions buoy - right in the middle of the pond

Approach to Fayette

In our nice new slip - we booked it online and there was a reserved sign on the slip - very cool.
We found out that Saturday was the park's annual Heritage Day so we booked two nights so we could hike and enjoy the second day.

Fayette is a former Industrial village and now State Park.  Check out this link

We arrived early afternoon and did some sight seeing. The park has staff that will give you a tour and provide some details on the history. Our tour guide was university student, Molly. She is studying museum management - with focus on making history interactive.

The purpose of the city was to made iron ingots from iron ore. The furnace is below - looking up the stack

 Building next to furnace

This is the casting room that sand was laid with canals scribed in it to flow and cool the iron

Iron ingots - some left

This was the the community building with music hall on the second floor.

The hotel for visiting guests and the third story with the dormers was boarding for single men.

The company store and warehouse that burned out

And we found out that this was Molly's LAST TOUR - how honored are we?

After we left Molly we visited some other buildings including the school house
OK my "I Spy" friends, can you see where we left our mark?

And this is teacher Mrs. O, dressed in her finest "first day of school" outfit. And again I Spy fans, how can you tell that this class is going to stay in home room a minute and a half after the last bell because they kept talking during announcements. PS they were all quiet the second day the moment that announcements started. And that's a true account- and one I smile at every time we talk about "classroom management." And check out the "look." "Ssssshh Ssssh I don't want to be late again"

And this is the Doctor's home. Patient rooms on the lower level and home on the second and third floors.

We are cute.

The limestone headlands at the entrance to the harbor.

Some evening shots

Now Blues' Clues fans this is a good one. You will need to be real thinkers for this one

See the two doors on the second floor? What did they go to?

Clue 1 The second floor was the quests rooms for the paying quests.
Clue 2 It went to a walkway that was covered so you didn't have to go outside
Clue 3 There was no running water in the building

Did you get it. Keep thinking. As we will be staying here two nights, I will reveal the correct answer in tomorrow's post to this and the "I Spy" above.

The sun is setting so it is time to say...........

Good Night and May God Bless
