Squirrel Island or Bust!!

Today was a wonderful summer day. There was the hazy sun of summer that fortunately makes it warm but doesn't generate strong direct sun that create strong sea breezes. Thus the plan for today became to make it out to Squirrel Island in the dinghy. We had been out once years ago. Things like these keeps reminding me how interesting the Maine Coast is as there is so much to see and do.

From the map below you can see we needed to travel about just shy of 3 miles. But you can also see that there is some open water, thus it needs to be very calm for us to be able to run the dinghy on plane and get out to the island - and as it turned out a perfect day it was.

Squirrel Island is a summer community created in the 1871. It has only a summer population.

Our trip began from the inner harbor. Here we are passing by Tumbler Island that forms the entrance to Boothbay Harbor.

Squirrel is to the left center and Burnt Island (with its lighthouse) is to the right.

We made it!!

There is a walkway around the island where homes are located - it is really quite impressive. I was imagining that the home owner's association fees are rather steep.

I will let you enjoy most of the shots with out text as they speak for themselves.

Notice the two girls on the water's edge.

  Notice this large fissure

It is right in front of this marvelous cottage.

Wondered if this has any political implications or more related to maybe a safari trip.

Around the southeast side of the island the road and path turned inland to cross the island. But we found a very nice trail that followed the shoreline.

This is looking at Ocean Point on the mainland.

We made it around to the northerly end of the island that is the communal hub of the place.

Here is a recreation hall.

And a church

With an appropriate welcome.

And if you look to the right, you will see a young lady playing the organ - likely practicing for Sunday service. It was most beautiful both to see and hear.

There is even a post office

Almost back to where we started.

And we met a newcomer also out to explore the island.

There is a boat club here - where we had tied up our dinghy.

With a launch service. The boat is named PIGLET.

And from the dock you can see this amazing home better

And we are on our way back. Looking at Burnt Island Lighthouse.

Entering Boothbay Harbor and passing Tumbler Island

And back at our mooring we are located right off the town dock. Thought it was neat to see this family dipping their toes in the water.

And later we looked up to see a little redhead that reminded us so much of our redheaded Gabrielle - who was once this size.

So night has again engulfed us.

So it is time to say ......................

Good Night and May God Bless
