Day 341 Deltaville to Tangier Is Wednesday April 24, 2019

The night was mild with some breeze. The sun was in full control all day.  Winds were 10 knots in the afternoon. Temperatures started low 50s and warmed to mid70s.

The day started with bright sun and mild temperatures.  A great day to travel a wonderful place that I had included as a must stop on my loop plans. That place is Tangier Island

First the interesting and sad thing to note is that the island is "sinking" and living on the island will have to end some day.

And I have a pant-load of photos for you.

The first photo is from our approach from across the bay to Tangier Island so this is the western shore of the island.

And this is the western entrance

There is a single channel that going straight through to the eastern end

And I had called and reached Milton Parks. He has run the marina on the island for 25 years. He is 87 and a lot of fun to talk with. He has a lot of stories as you might expect. He worked from Cape Charles (south tip of DELMARVA peninsula) for 25 years fishing and he was in the Coast Guard for a while. He says that when you die if you don't go to heaven you go to Cape Charles. He did grow up on the island so this is home. One of his daughters, who is the island doctor, lives on the island. She is 67. He had gall bladder surgery so I was saying he had trouble getting up from being on his knees without holding on to a chair or something. Hope I can even get down on my knees at that age.

There are some neat information posters around town. Here you can see Milton dressed up and on his scooter - and a little younger.

Like the islands of Maine, fishing is what is the focus around the island

It was lunch time so we had lunch as the only open restaurant -Lorrianes. Note that you will see it in the linked "sinking" website I added above. The crabcake sandwich was wonderful. It was certainly fresh, full of crabmeat, and cooked just right - yum!! And homemade potato chips too!!

The post office is an important part for the 500 year round folks here.

And the church is likely a big part as well.

The streets are narrow and most of the yards are fenced. Guess everyone wants to protect the edge of their property.

And there are graves all over - and many in above ground coffins because of the high water table and flooding that would now float a coffin buried deeper.

And there was a second church on the island.

From this poster you can see that the south end of the island was at one time the landing spot for streamboats that served the island.

 But is now just marshland.

And there is always someone who collects at the old stuff. Note that the house is very well kept and the piles of stuff are neat - so to speak. Not sure if stuff is sold at times when the piles get too high.

The south end of the island is a beach. There is a pedestrian bridge you cross to get to it.

And the beach.

And it goes around the corner for about a mile and half. The sand was nice but very soft and I didn't want to fill my shoes so I didn't go any further.

And there are golf carts everywhere. This one caught my eye with Maine written on it. Not sure why thought as every thing else is referencing something nearby.

And the water tank. Not sure where they get there fresh water.

A notable home

Now a B&B

And now back to the dock

Milton said that this boat was built by MDI boats on Mount Desert Island (Bar Harbor)

On old stuff along any waterfront

And the public pier that is used to land the hoards of folks that come in the summer. Glad we had it to ourselves - relatively.

And grandkids are spoiled here too!!

New crab pots ready to go

And there is even and airport.

Not many places I would dare stand of the runway for a picture

A marsh runs through the middle of the island.

 As you can see

And I was able to get the drone up for some neat shots.

This is looking to the east. Not how the crab shacks are in open water. They where along land at one time..

The island in the upper left was connected to the main island in the past and had a number of homes there. You

So it was a great day and time to say ...............

Good Night and May God Bless
