The night was mild and bright sun was exchanged for the cold and rain of yesterday. The wind was calm and the seas had a small lump left over from yesterday.
It was a glorious day to start the 2019 Downeast Yacht Club (DEYC) cruise.
My friend from down south has been asking for photos of the Maine coast (he cruised with us several time during his time in the area) so there is a pant load of photos that I hope you will enjoy.
We left Boothbay Harbor at 0800. We had planned to depart on Friday to get down the coast a ways but as you can see from the photo below, it was wise to sit still in BBH for the day. It is always good to be there no matter what the weather. Richard and Betsy in Maine Mover arrived later. We all went for Chinese (yes in the land of fresh seafood) for dinner and then enjoyed several rounds of Mexican Train until we were all about to fall asleep.
The wait for the weather proved to be a wise choice as the morning was bright and calm. Here we are departing BBH.
And this is looking out to Tumbler Island in foreground that guards the entrance to the harbor. Burnt Island and its lighthouse can be see to the center right in the photo.
Next up we pass Ram Island Light with Fishermans Island in the background.
And this is looking back at the lighthouse.
Next we passed Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. You can drive to this one and it is photographed nearly as much as Portland Headlight.
We took the inside passage that goes by Port Clyde. Hupper Island is on the left and Port Clyde is seen in the distance. As a fun fact Chief Justice John Roberts has a house on Hupper Island directly across from the town dock.
And then turning to starboard (right) we see the Marshall Point Lighthouse. Does it look familiar? Try to picture it from the land side looking out. Well I won't make you struggle too much - it was the lighthouse at which Forest Gump ends his big run.
And here is looking pass the lighthouse toward Mosquito Island.
And along the way to Mosquito Island we pass my favorite tree in the world. I remember first seeing this wonderful example of individual fortitude over thirty years ago on a trip with friends from Camden to Portland with a stop at Port Clyde. It has stood the test of time, all by itself as you can see, and always makes me smile. I always give a tip of my hat to my old friend.
Next comes Whitehhead lighthouse - it is on an island. Like the Cuckolds in Boothbay, the light keepers house is being restored and looks amazing.
Whitehead Lighthouse is at the entrance to Muscle Ridge (in Maine I would have thought this was misspelled and should be Mussel Ridge) but that is what the chart says. It is a marvelous ride with islands on your right and the mainland with the Camden hills to your left. Always, makes my heart sing to see it - and we have such a beautiful day that it is as good as it gets.
About half way up Muscle Ridge Channel is our destination, Dix Island. It was once a granite quarry with a complete village including boarding house. This next several photos take us into the anchorage spot.
Once anchored we enjoy a visit with friends Bob and Paula with Scupper, the supposed to be miniture fellow that has just grown a tad more - but he is all a big ball of fun.
We take a dinghy ride to walk Dix Island. It is now a private Island but visitors are allowed to walk the path that goes around the island. Pictures below do not do the vistas justice. With all that we saw on the Great Loop, I have to say that Maine, with places like this, is the most beautiful place to go boating.

In the photos below you can see some of the DEYC boats that have come into the anchorage. Think there are nearly 40 boats all tallied.
And the event for the night is fish chowder served on the beach - yum - great job. The club really is a great bunch of people that enjoy boating. A great start to the week cruise.
As you can see the sun is setting in the west.
