First Overnight of the Season - Boothbay Harbor

It has been a while since my last post. The reason is the weather has not been our friend since getting to Robinhood. The most disappointing example was Memorial Day weekend that was a complete washout with really cold temperatures. We even came home early to do some chores - and put in a fire because it was cold!!

But this weekend was completely different - a wonderful time from Friday to Sunday. Also, we were so pleased for good weather as this was the weekend we had planned to have granddaughters Lauren and Bree join us!! So this post will be a good deal of family but also will highlight that the scenes in Maine can be just wonderful where ever you are and only traveling short distances.

So here is Bree - with a huge waffle that she got at lunch on Friday during our trip to Maine from NH.

And Lauren with a club sandwich that was also a tall order to finish - but we didn't make them clean their plates! In fact, it was rather tasty duty to help Bree clean hers.

Well we made it to Robinhood and we need to have our annual photos with the Chief.

Bree is striking a great look alike pose of the Chief. (She is the one on the right in case she did too good a job of disguise)

We stayed at Robinhood Friday night and played games and feasted on the snacks that Nana had stored so well in advance.

Bree was my co-captain for the weekend. Lauren decided that she liked the ride from the comfort of the cabin.

And as soon as we made Boothbay Harbor it was time for shopping. Bree found a suitable cap to highlight her skills.

A mirror in the store gave us a chance for an interesting "selfie".  Look close - one of us is sticking out their tongues. I could say it was the one with the cap - but I guess that won't help, would it.

And the required photo under the Boothbay Harbor sign.

Some shots from our mooring. Boothbay is definitely coming out of its Covid slump .........

....... as you can see from the tour boats that are running a full schedule.

A trip to Sherman's Book store is a must do. Sticker books are still a fun purchase.

We ate dinner on the boat with the plan that a trip in for ice cream would fill the need for dessert. As you can see I think we accomplished that very well.

These chairs are actually made with the same materials that lobster traps are now made of - wire mesh. The report is that they are about as comfortable as a lobster trap.

Sunday morning found us walking to see the "Butt Tree." It is a rather funny sight!!.

The fisherman's memorial is always interesting.

The girls are happy to be big enough now to wear inflatable life vests- much more comfortable.

This well kept lobster boat is a throw back to the days when all of the lobster boats were wood. It is now an odd site - just like the wooden lobster traps that are now all wire mesh.

The Appledore is ready for another season - and made a number of trips this weekend.

After breakfast on the boat, we motored just outside of the harbor to Burnt Island Light Station.

The lighthouse was automated by the Coast Guard, and like many of them the buildings were left to the elements. Local folks have taken up the restoration cause and have done a remarkable job restoring the light and the keepers house. We added our suggested donation to help the cause.

Lauren, our resident dance student, found a number of places to stretch and show off her wonderful form. I am sore and hurting just from watching her.

Last year the light was shrouded in staging as work was being done to the stone work and paint. It stands proud and regal now that work has been completed.

I could do that - ya sure. Great job Lauren!

We are just outside of Boothbay Harbor, but with a wonderful old Friendship sloop smartly sailing by, it is a wonderful scene. It is easy to imagine a time when the view was filled with sails of working craft.

We managed to find the rope swing that is always fun. Even Nana gave it a go!!!!

Yahoo Nana!!!!!!

A walk to the landing beach was great fun. Here is the restored boathouse. Notice the boathouse roof is made to conform to the incline of the boat ramp.

And as you can see, those metal traps can still be tossed about by an angry sea.

The fellow with Faye and the girls is Steve. As it turns out he lived on Burnt Island for eight years with his family as his Dad was keeper of the light. He told us that back then the light was kerosene and needed constant attention. It could go out or flame up and soot the lens of the light. There was then a frenzied rush to clean and restore the full brightness of the light. He now lives in Vermont and was in BBH to attend the 93rd birthday of a family friend from back in his lighthouse days. So much fun to meet him.

And what trip on the boat would be complete without "dinghy rides!!" We generally wait for dinghy rides until we come to Burnt Island as there is a slow speed law in Boothbay Harbor and it takes a long time to motor out past the restricted area. As you can see from this shot our Burnt Island guest mooring is just outside Boothbay Harbor which is seen in the background.

And as Bree likes to holler on the way by, "Best Day Ever!!!"

So a wonderful weekend was had by all - and we got the girls home and tired - they will sleep well tonight.  So it is time to say ............

Good Night and May God Bless
