As you can see from the map, we left Northeast Harbor and traveled up Somes Sound, Mount Desert's claim to a fiord, to Somesville at the head of the sound. We planned to spend two days here to wait out a rain day. Cell service is poor - at least for Verizon. There is a cell tower within throwing distance (almost) but it ain't a Verizon tower - very frustrating - particularly if staying several days.
Wednesday was a nice day with increasing hazy clouds during the day - an indication that the forecast of rain would be more than just a quick passing front.
On our way up Somes Sound we stopped at Southwest Harbor for fuel.
Marie - a beautiful old yacht was anchored just outside the harbor.
Leaving Southwest Harbor and starting up Somes Sound.
The hills of Somes Sound
This is Valley Cove.
Approach into Somesville
View from the spot we anchored - looking south back down the sound.
The view from the dinghy of the island and bar seen in the above photo.
Here we are. Notice that the clouds have filled in completely.
The rain was still a few hours off so we were able to get off the boat to see a play. Here is the view from the town dock. Notice the very interesting cloud formations.
A sign that this is an old village.
And the often photographed pedestrian bridge.
And after a nice 15 minute walk we arrived at the theatre (notice spelling on sign),
It is a great small theater - been presenting plays for a lot of years.
It turns out the play is a one women - one act - play about a harried reservation specialist at an exclusive NY restaurant. The young actress was Mary Paola - I can't imagine being able to even get the introduction right - let alone being a one person cast - all alone! (yes I know that sounded like Yogi Berra - but I thought he had some wonderful quotes)
The rain did come - and we just made it back to the boat with an hour to spare. Thursday was indeed a washout day. But we enjoyed our nice dry place in the world.
Friday we left Somesville on the promise that the clouds would clear. Here we are headed down Somes Sound.
And about the time we rounded the southern end of Mount Desert and headed up the east side toward Bar Harbor, the sun was able bust on through and provide a rather beautiful day.
You can see Sand Beach in the left side of the photo.
And here we are approaching Bar Harbor and can see the Porcupine Islands that encircle BH.
Our anchorage north of Bar Island - here is looking toward Bar Harbor docks - at half tide a continuous bar connecting island and mainland appears - hence the name of the island.
Right on the waterfront is Bar Harbor Inn - in front is the Terrace Restaurant - we always have lunch here!! Yum, And the blueberry pie al a mode was outstanding!!!
After lunch we walked around town and found my 2022 wall calendars of Acadia National Park that I enjoy so much.
Then we walked along the wonderful shore line path.
Couldn't resist this photo.
The trail takes us to the south end of town.
We ended up on the shore again - and at the beginning of the "bar" that has emerged with the dropping tide. I have never seen so many people here before.
And our boat is in the distance
The view from our anchorage revels some stunning "cottages"
As you can see the sun is falling just like the tide did earlier.
And I hope it rises again in the morning - just as the tide did to make the bar disappear as you can see - or not see - so to speak - I know more Yogi speak - but I can't help it.
It has been a rather nice day so time to say ...........................
Good Night and May God Bless
