Day 41 Fenelon Falls to Rosedale Saturday June 30 2018

Day 41 Fenelon Falls to Rosedale Saturday June 30 2018

Clear sky at night.  The temperature was mild in the 60s. the morning warmed again quickly. A nice breeze came up soon. A nice, but very warm day.

We traveled from one lock to another. The trip was pleasant across Cameron Lake and into the cut canal that led to Rosedale Lock. We wanted to go through the lock and tie up above the lock but there was only space on the lower side - which was fine and a nice view looking back into the lake.

A few shots from around the lock highlights why it, and its location a nice middle distance from some heavy boating centers, many boats like to tie up here for a day or two.

Shots below are from the upper side of the lock.
The Trent Severn Waterway is nicely managed and there is a substantive amount of investment placed in improvements. The cabins below are an example. There have been constructed only the lock canal here and can be rented by non-boaters and boaters alike. Seems like a nice way to spend some time on the water.

The photo below is of the profile of the TSW. Think you can even read it if you click on it to view. The reason that I added it is point out that once we pass through the Rosedale lock on Monday, we will be at the highest point of the TSW - and it will be all downhill from there - at least to Severn and the Georgian Bay
The reason we moved from Fenelon Falls was to get to a lock we could stay for two days. Cousin Brenda and husband Terry, graciously, came and picked us up for a ride back to their house for the weekend. Brenda was able to sneak up behind me while I was waiting for them. The reason was they bought a new Jeep Trail Hawk this past week - and it was white. Seeing it drive in the roadway I said about the white Jeep approaching, "That can't be them, They have a black Jeep" And thus I turned my back to the parking lot continue to watch the action in the lock. "Hey there!!" a close by voice announced in my ear.  "Where did you come from?" .... "Oh I see, eh?"
We had a pleasant ride back to their very nice home in Brampton, which is part of the Greater Toronto area. Our trip was strange first, by having a ride in a automobile. and second, by making a stop at a Walmart. Toronto is crowded and this Walmart was doing it best to mimic its host City area - it was packed.

We watched a fun movie, A Walk in the Woods, with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It was about two old guys attempting to walk the Appalachian Trail - since we all talk a big talk of doing some serious hiking. As you can guess they didn't make it and neither would we.

So Time to say

Good Night and May God Bless

Day 40 Sturgeon Lake to Fenelon Falls Friday June 29, 2018

Day 40 Sturgeon Lake to Fenelon Falls Friday June 29, 2018

The cloud free afternoon gave way to a cloud free night. The full moon was out that woke me as I thought it was the beginnings of dawn. Sitting up for a while I was mesmerized by the brilliant white light. The ethereal scene transfixed me as I thought of being by ourselves on this beautiful lake - and many miles from home.   The temperature was mild in the 60s. The glorious night continued into a glorious day that only grew more summer like as the sun marched time across the sky until a cool evening came to relax us.

As you recall yesterday was suppose to be a short run to Fenelon Falls - but we stopped half way - so we traveled the other half today.

The ride was nice across the remainder of Sturgeon Lake. There is a river like approach to Fenelon Falls for several miles. On the nearby shore it was easy to see the flags set in anticipation of Canada Day on July 1.

We arrived just before lunch and ate on the boat.  We walked around town.  We first toured north of our lock wall tie-up and found this nice monument with a view to our travel path tomorrow.

There was also a nice park along the water.
Adjacent to the park was the James Wallis House museum. We almost didn't go in - but I am glad we did.

The building turned out to be quite large and filled with a substantive number of items from the early 1800s period. It was very fascinating.

There was even a one room attached for the one room classroom. Faye decided to take her place, from the not too distant past, at the front of the class to begin my lessons for the day

I even got " The Look" from Mrs O when I wasn't paying attention. I would have loved to have been a student in her class.
There were all kinds of articles - and I am likely boring you with all these pictures - but I want help remembering all that we saw.

Yup that is a real birch bake canoe.

OK to make it fun - "I Spy" an Ice cream maker - can you see it? And a pancake maker - on the stove.
OK Can you figure this one out?
It is your standard Craftsman Radial Arm Drill Press - the early manual version.

William Jordan Jr - (Faye's maiden name) came over to Canada in the days of the settlement of the area.
Now here is something I had no idea what it was - It seems creepy to me - read the sign. One way to keep the memories of Great Gram "alive."

Movie- ing to more recent time here are a few interesting items

Now that's a toy chest!!

An in it was one of my most favorite toys - the work bench with pegs that you drove down with the hammer -and you turned it over and whacked them again - and turned it over.... you get the picture.

And here is a model case of "tinker toys" that was the first toy I can recall playing with. And the reason they are here is Tinker Toys was first manufactured in Fenelon Falls!!

And finally a few scenes from around a nice Main Street

Hope the worms and Ice Cream are in separate coolers.

Our spot on the upper wall - very nice.
 The Fenelon Falls

And this shot I just had to add.
What product does it remind you of?
Faye and I decided to sit here for a while and take in the sun- a most pleasant place to just hold hands and watch the sun sink lower.

So time to say

Good Night and May God Bless

Day 39 Bobcaygeon to Sturgeon Lake Thursday June 28, 2018

Day 39 Bobcaygeon to Sturgeon Lake Thursday June 28, 2018

Clouds remained over night. The temperature was mild in the 60s. The day started cloudy but gave way to beautiful clearing all the way to a cloudless sky. Glorious afternoon.

As noted above the day started with the remaining heavy clouds of yesterday. The Canadian geese

have seemed to followed us back home to Canada for the summer - just like the summer deluge of tourists and summer dwellers that will likely descend upon the TSW beginning this weekend. It is one of the reasons that I wanted to be nicely along the TSW at this time of year.

Well I said yesterday that we were going to Fenlon Falls - but we changed our mind part way there. Sturgeon Lake is the large and long lake that is located between the locks at Bobcaygeon and Fenlon Falls. We liked the looks of the lake and decided to find a place to anchor. As you can see from our trip map, our spot in a wonderful scenic spot on the north shore. From the photos below you can see that this area is largely undeveloped.

There was even a wonderful beach and picnic park just around the corner in the above photo. The park was donated by a Col MacAlpine to the town - a fine donation I would say.

There is even a nice concrete dock and boat launch ramp.

We finished our trip ashore with a walk along the local road to a nice cluster of real cottages (not the McMansions we  have seen all too often) with nice vantage point on the lake - I thought I took a photo but I guess I didn't - you will just have to use your imagination.

A fine time was also had for reading - something that I have not found the time to do. But as I have said a few times before in posts, we have moved steady to be able to get to this area in a timely manner so we would be able to go slow and enjoy the location. And we have - Faye is even often saying "the next time we come here" so I guess that is the best way of saying this is a great adventure.

Got to get back to my book - The Unlikely Spy by Danial Silva - so I will say

Good Night and May God Bless

Day 38 Bobcaygeon 2nd day Wednesday June 27, 2018

The sunny evening of yesterday gave way to clouds over night. The temperature was mild in the 60s. Today was cloudy all day with periods of showers mostly in the afternoon.

As the weather was not the greatest we decided to stay put today and relax and do some chores.

The highlight of the morning was the passing of the mini- cruise ship the Kawartha Voyageur.

They stopped on the lock wall just above us and rolled out their charge of would be shoppers. However I doubt that many purchases were made in the Bobcaygeaon Beach store as the mostly seniors citizens were not likely in the market for the latest in swim wear.

I will admit it looked like a fun way to see the Trent Severn Waterway.

It also reminded me that the area is the home of the largest houseboat rental companies. There is one docked just in front of us.  They come in various sizes that sleeps up to 12. These one has two families onboard.

Late morning was decided was the time to walk to the laundromat.  Time passed quietly as I brought my Kindle to read.  As it was near noon, we indulged in lunch at a diner in the village. While waiting for our lunch we had fun reading and playing truth or false with the cards provided at each table. After a while the card below showed up that made us both laugh. Before you read it I need to provide the necessary background.

When we moved to NH a number of years ago, Faye worked in the office of a group of psychiatrists and psychologists. One she got to know well and we even spent several times together with him and his girlfriend. He was from Greece and somewhat self-assured - (but he couldn't made a decision if his life depended on it). He bought a Mazda Miata and told us it had real Naugahyde Leather seats. We never did convince him that Naugahyde was not real leather - so on to the card. I will let you read the  top True or Myth for yourselves.  Trust you can see the reason for our substantive amusement.

We managed to get back to the boat just before a rain shower came that would have dampened our freshly laundered clothes and sheets.

Reading and relaxing continued through the afternoon. It has been a good day of R&R. Tomorrow we will move to Fenlon Falls - an adventurous distance of 16 miles.

So to allow plenty of time to prepare for the arduous journey tomorrow I will say ........

Good Night and May God Bless

Day 37 Lovesick Lock to Bobcaygeon Tuesday June 26, 2018

Day 37 Lovesick Lock to Bobcaygeon Tuesday June 26, 2018

It was cool last night - upper forties - nice for sleeping with the covers pulled up. The clouds remained departed that gave a clear night. We awoke to a cloudless sky and warming sun to take the chill off. The strong breeze of yesterday was gone, and a cooling breeze built nicely in the afternoon.

The trip from Lovesick Love to Bobcaygeon was about 26 miles. We had one lock mid way that we slid right into and then continued to Bobcaygeon where there were one more for the day. There was some nice rural areas like below

and then there we places where it seems the next McMansion was bigger than the last. These were locate principally on Pigeon Lake, the large body of water just before the village of Bobcaygeon. I decided that I didn't come to photograph the "cottages" of the nearby Toronto-ites so you will need to use you imagination. I did photgraph one of many cottages located on islands. It is amazing that such a nice place is on such a tiny spot of land. Our Maine boating friends can think of Harbor Island in Boothbay Harbor.

There are usually spots to tie up to at the locks on the lower and upper sides. We have found the upper sides to be generally more appealing. The one at Bobcaygeon was no exception. There was a nice space just after the lock as you can see in the two shots below.

To go with the high end homes in the area, there are a few high end boutiques in the center of the village. The two below are the Beach Pavilion in the foreground and the stone building on the left is the land of shoes - it reminded me of a satellite store of Macy's from NYC.

Fortunately Faye did only looking and no buying.

They even are suppliers to Paul Bunyan as you can see from the size of this chair. He didn't stop by though while we were there.

A neat old stone building on Main Street

At the end on the street the building above is located was this small, but pleasant, park area that we sat at for a moments of reflection and feeling of the cool breeze
Walking back into town we took some photos of the lower wall, that you can see is not as nice as the upper wall.

The day was finished with a nice walk - which proved noteworthy as we reached 8000 steps - which removed all guilt so we could have wonderful ice cream at the Karwartha Ice Cream factory.  We may need to spend another day here.

The ice cream has made me sleepy, so time to say .....

Good Night and May God Bless
