Day 9 Northeast Harbor

The weather was a mixed bag.  The night was again clear with temperatures in the upper 50s. The day was sunny to start and the clouds were in control by midday and then back to clear in the early evening.  High to low sixties with NW winds of about 5 knots.

Today we decided to stay here for another two days in NE Harbor. We're retired so we can!! No vacation limits of working years. The reason was today would be a easy day and tomorrow another day of a hike to somewhere as the weather was iffy today but forecast as nice tomorrow.

We did a little walk to the Azalea Gardens. This garden is located at the north end of Northeast Harbor. From the map below you can see that our walk was about  3/4 mile in distance. It is tough to see but most of the route as along the main road into town. The last segment of our walk shown on the map though was a short but most pleasant trail that cut across the corner of the road route. I am again pleased to note that this is another trail - albeit a very short one - that we have never taken. We have visited these gardens several times over the years but have always walked up from the other side of the harbor. I am glad you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Our new trail is called the Asticou stream trail. Here is a very interesting article on the name Asticou

The trail leads soon to the head of the harbor. You can see it is an interesting perspective and the sun of the morning has already given way to clouds - but no rain.

As the name implies there is a very nice stream with several bridge crossings.

One even affords a comfortable bench to sit and listen to the comforting babbling of the stream.

And shortly thereafter we arrived at the Azalea Gardens. As Jason, the gardener of Thuya Gardens mentioned in yesterday's post, said the blooms of this garden have largely passed. But as you can see it is still a beautiful place.

Be sure to look close to see the wonderful circular rake pattern in the gravel walkway - never imagined raking could be so creative and artistic.

A interesting sand garden

I am not sure what this tree is but the outer ends of the branches look like cotton candy - quite unique and eye catching.

This trees was also attention getting.

The leaves are really unusual.

And the name is....

Back at the boat I have for lunch one Paula's biscuits, from our visit with her and Bob back in Pulpit Harbor, toasted with PB and J - yum.

And this evening while planning for tomorrow's trek I remembered gardener Jason also mentioned that the Rockefeller Gardens are arranged to now be in peak bloom - a little after Thuya Gardens. But you need reservations to get in and I have heard that it is booked long in advance. On a whim I checked for tomorrow and was amazed to find two tickets remaining for tomorrow!! We can hike over to there (I think) and make for a rather wonderful trek. Wish us luck and I hope to have some wonderful shots of one of the renowned gardens in the land.

So time to say ...............................

Good Night and May God Bless
