We stayed a second day at Mill Cove and had our second day of discovery in our own "backyard." I feel like the "Backyardigans" The grandkids will know what I mean. The discovery was exploring Porters Preserve.
The walk to the preserve was just under a mile and the walk around the preserve was about the same for a total of a little over 3 miles of travel. We began our walk by stopping at the dock of the Trevett General Store at the bridge. It is also a lobster dock. Look close at the support for this wharf. There are steel beams under the cantilevered deck and building but the attempt at posts at the corners seems a bit inadequate to me.
And this is the store. We planned to have a snack when we got back.
The new bridge
And a crew of inspectors on the wire is overseeing its operation - which has had problems since opening this year.
Perelandra in the distance
And the Barters Island Baptist Church is on the way.
And an interesting farm building along the way.
You can see Perelandra in the bay
A beautiful freshwater pond - but no public access
And we are at the Porters Preserve.
A comfortable spot to enjoy the view
As we were sitting several kayakers passed by. The hollered that they were the last ones. Turns out they were in a round Barters Island race. We learned that there were about forty that started. I thought there seemed to be a lot of kayakers out today.
At the north edge of the park we were able to view the house that I showed in yesterday's post. It is really a handsome old (and updated) homestead.
Here is their view down the Sheepscot River
And we discovered this old foundation - not sure what the structure might have been,, but it did have an access in the wall that made me think the foundation was a root cellar and that a house may have been there.
We arrived back at the general store well after lunch. We planned to have lunch but it was Saturday and busy so we decided not to wait and headed back to the boat for a quickly prepared repast.
The day remained cloudy with little sun poking through. But the closer it got to sunset the more I thought it might have some breaks in the clouds that might give a nice sunset. I certainly got that right.
I began watching the sun with flying the drone.
Then the sunlight got underneath the clouds and the fire in the sky appeared. It was likely the most beautiful and awe inspiring display I have seen. The photos do not do it justice and the scene was like a kaleidoscope that slowing changed and made it seem like the sky was ablaze with slow moving fire.
So with this as a spectacular end to the day, I will say ..................
Good Night and May God Bless
