Day 3 Skyline Lodge, Luray, Virginia to Roanoke VA Friday October 13, 2017

Day 3  Skyline Lodge, Luray, Virginia to Roanoke VA Friday October 13, 2017

The day dawned cold and again very cloudy. We had a very nice breakfast at the dining hall. Darren made omelets - nice young black man from Baltimore who had been there a month. He stays at employee lodge on site. I wondered how they could staff the facility with out doing something such as that.

We hiked the Limberlost trail in spite of the weather and had a wonderful time. It was a 1.5 mile loop in the woods that was really enjoyable. We commented on the very different forest here than from Maine. No evergreens to speak of at all.

While on the trail met Gary and Karen from Delaware. The honeymooned in Acadia 39 years ago and the told them they should go back. They had not wanted to account reports of crowds but we told them to go in June or July for a great time.

They told us of Yellowstone and Glacier NP that we are now anxious to try.

From the sign below we can surmise what part of the country we are in. I think it is an important part of our history that we should always remember and learn from.
We completed SkyLine Drive by early afternoon and then diverted into Waynesboro for lunch at a slow McDonald's. We then drove a fair ways on I-81. Well what do you know. The day finally cleared. We diverted to the Blue Ridge Parkway and what a ride. It was wonderful. A few photos to try to capture a little sense of how wonderful the ride.

We ended up at the Colony House motel in Roanoke. An old hotel celebrating 60 years. The room was nice for $66. Dinner at Panera Bread was easy and just enough as it was late in the evening.

A very nice day indeed.
