Day 353 Port Washington LI to Mattituck LI Monday May 6, 2019

The night was cool and the rain stopped. Bright sun greeted us and stayed all day. Light E wind made for easy ride. Temperatures started in high 40s and made it to low 60s.

The rain of yesterday has departed. The last remaining clouds were sliding to the east.

Sun up and time to make some distance. We can imagine being home and to hopefully time the weather, we will skip some of the places we stopped on the way down. Today we motored on by Eaton's Neck and made it to Mattituck. It is on the north side of Long Island as was Port Washington.

The morning air was cool and dry and the Admiral is up early and helping out as she always does.

Another shot of the McMansions on the west side of the harbor. This area is known as ......... wait for it ...............  Kings Point. Should have guessed.

And we are still meeting commercial traffic but now it is going along the route we are so passing port to port is normal and just like driving your car and meeting a truck going the other way. OK if everyone just stays on their side of the road.

The sun is bright and tough to look into was we head east. But soon it is high enough so it is not so blinding.

You can't really see it in this photo, but if you look real hard and close you can see the outline of the buildings of the Big Apple which are rapidly fading into the background. I did have to smile when I thought of all those folks that were headed off to work today on this beautiful Monday.

Long Island has some large deposits of sand. There are a number of places that have large bluffs that look like they are constantly eroding into the sea. Guess that is why in most of these places you do not see homes or building on top of them.

Our trip today is about 60 miles. We could have pressed on further but I wanted to stop for fuel, which will be sufficient to get us to NH,  and we really did want to revisit Lombardi's Love Lane Market - that you will see below.

These cliffs were just before the entrance to the Mattituck inlet.

And here we are entering the inlet

It is a nice winding estuary that slices about 1.5 miles into the north end fork of east Long Island.

And the osprey really like it here too. A wonderful family neighborhood.

Approaching the first marina where we will get fuel. Sal Messina is the General Manager who is on the dock when we arrive. He is training a office hand, Courtney, and they welcome us warmly. Turns out that he was born at the Mercy Hospital in Portland (I was born in the other Portland hospital, Maine Medical) and he lived in Cape Elizabeth on Ocean House Road until he was 12 and then the family moved to LI.

Leaving our fuel stop, we head up about a mile to the very nice anchorage.

And here we are at the anchorage. A fine, perfectly protected spot.  Interesting, it is not filled with moorings. The reason is the channel was dredged using federal dollars and a stipulation is the anchorage area must remain clear - I think it is wonderful.

And at the head of the harbor there is a wonderful "dinghy only" dock. Last year the float and ramp were not in place. But much to my surprise and joy, this year it is already in and available.  Last year we had to land in a muddy area to the left to get ashore and I was not looking forward to that again.

And off we go to the tiny little village shopping area of Mattituck. It does have a nice hardware store.

And an attractive block of shops and stores.

Including, our objective, Lombardi's Love Lane Market. The street is indeed named Love Lane.

And next door there is even a post office. How much longer are we going to need such places?

And here we are at the object of our quest. The Italian deli counter. It has been rearranged since last time but all the amazing homemade temptations are still here.

And as it is early afternoon, and we snacked along the way, we are delighted to both have the 'Arthur Avenue," a made to order eggplant sandwich with roasted red peppers and fresh melted mozzarella cheese.

YUM times two!!! She is some cute don't you think? No, not the sandwich silly!

And after filling a large shopping bag with treats to take along, we head back to our trusted waterfront home for a restful evening and sleep.

So it must be time to say .......................

Good Night and May God Bless
