Day 10 DEYC 2019 Cruise Harbor & Hall Island to Robinhood Monday July 22, 2019

The night was mild and the sun returned nicely this morning but clouds moved over us and rain arrived a short while after docked. The wind was nearly calm all day  Temperatures in the high 70s

Glad we put in a long day on Sunday. It was a wonderful spot and it only left us with a leisurely run back to Robinhood.

Just a few pictures to highlight our short trip home to end a fine cruise.

If you recall we could see a lighthouse from the anchorage at Harbor and Hall Islands. It was Franklin Island Light and here it is as we passed by to today's run. If you look closely you can see the foundation for the keepers house that has long been removed.

And back close to Boothbay we again pass through Fishermans Passage and by Ram Island Light.

After passing through the Southport Swing Bridge, we pass the light on the NE point of Southport Island  with Indian ledges unseen to our starboard. It always make me smile to see the light perched so well on the end of the ledge that covers at high water.

And the clouds were growing heavier as we made our final approach to Robinhood Marina seen below. And finally as the nursery rhyme says "Home again, home again, jiggety-jig."

We plan to be out once more this summer for an extended time. I will update the blog then.

Day 9 DEYC 2019 Cruise Northeast Harbor to Harbor & Hall Island Sunday July 21, 2019

The night was mild and the sun returned nicely this morning. The wind came up from the SW at 10 kts   Temperatures in the high 80s


Today was "Go West Young Man" day. Well at least I qualify to go west. We are headed back to Robinhood Marina so we can go and get some cute grandkids to join us on the boat for a while.

We departed Northeast Harbor at 0700. The seas were calm and there was just a little haze in the air.
After a short while we pass Bass Harbor Light. Faye laughs each time we come through here as I must have a zillion photos of the light. But its always a new day and the views are different each time. Here are today's

Next we pass through York Passage. A winding road through the rock piles near the NE end of Swan Island. 

We cross Jericho Bay and are in Merchant Row. This area of islands is second to none.

Near the end of Merchants Row is the town of Stonington. Can you guess what the chief industry is in this town?

Marks Island Light is the beacon for the west end of Merchants Row.

We then crossed West Penobscot Bay and entered the Fox Islands Thorofare.  The Goose Rock caisson light looks like it should be in the Chesapeake Bay

Brown's Point Light marks the west end of the Fox Islands Thorofare.

The open ocean waters of West Penobscot Bay had only a slight chop today - perfect day for passage west. Here is looking over Andrews Island and the mainland beyond.

Two Bush Island Light guards the entrance to West Penobscot Island. It must be a wild place in a raging storm.

We soon are across to the entrance to Port Clyde and we again see Marshall Point Light.

A passing shower moves just to the south of us. And after navigating a few twists and turns we arrive at Harbor& Hall Islands. It is a beautiful spot and provides good protection and fine views.

The Admiral orchestrates production of a wonderful spaghetti dinner - yum.

The breeze of this afternoon has died to a whisper. The ocean swells are heard rolling up gently on the seaward side of the rocks below that protect the harbor. An evening that you dream about in the dead of winter.

We did join with the crews of Wildflower, PoBoy, and Freedom for a last gathering of DEYC crew - and enjoyed home baked cookies. A fitting end to a fine trip. 

And the sun is marching to close out another day - and a fine one at that.

So it must be time to say ...........

Day 8 DEYC 2019 Cruise Northeast Harbor Day 4 Saturday July 20, 2019

The night was mild and the sun returned nicely this morning. The wind came up from the SW at 10 kts   Temperatures in the low 90s


We decided to do an ambitious hike today. We did over 7.5 miles and 23,567 steps today. Wow, that was a lot in the heat. The hike started again with a connection to the Asticou Trail and passing by the Map House.

At about 1.1 miles we turned left onto the Penobscot Mountain Trail. We had never hiked this trail. We had always done Penobscot Mountain by starting in Jordan Pond and going up the Spring Trail - that is a very steep climb with many substantial scrambles.

This trail soon crossed a carriage road. - then two - then three.

The trail was much less a vertical challenge as the ascent was a more moderate climb. But it was still long. There were some nice vistas alone the way.

And the trail had a stretch of raised log pathways over wet areas.

We arrived at the junction of with the Spring Trail - the one we usually take.

The last mile is on the open rock area to the top.

 About a half mile from the top, there is what looks to be the top - its a "got ya" faked out.

 But the actual top is not to much further.

In the sun and temperature it was a substantial effort to get to the top - but we did!!!

This is a close up from the spot of the above photo. You can see Northeast Harbor and where we have to walk back to before our hike is done.

The heat was really intense on the way back. Here we have made it to the Map House to sit for a while to recover some stamina to finish the hike - almost home.
 

And back on the main road to the dinghy landing is a home named for our home town in New Hampshire.

This is the last night of the DEYC Club cruise. We all gather for a dinner at the Tan Turtle that is just off of the waterfront seen here.

Flea Captain Ron did a wonderful job with the awards for the cruise.

And coming back from the dinner, night was falling as quickly as my energy on the last of our hike today.

I will make a few more post as we travel back to Robinhood.  But for now,
