Day 20 Rome (NY that is) to Sylvan Beach Saturday June 9, 2018

Day 20 Rome (NY that is) to Sylvan Beach Saturday June 9, 2018

It was again cool last night - 50 degrees- just right  for sleeping.  Clouds in afternoon then they cleared again.  The day warmed up quickly so we were able to start and stay in short sleeves and shorts.

Well the day's efforts began with trying to respond to a major mechanical failure on the boat that happened yesterday on the way to Rome. No the engines are fine, nope the generator is doing well, thank you, not the inverter (makes AC from the batteries) - think Admiral and what she needs for her water. That's it, the ice maker quit. And this is the little devil removed from the freezer in the refrigerator. The how I won't bore you with - it is the adventure to fix it that is fun. So let's go.

Google is amazing. Says Smith's appliance is just up the road. Opens at 9:30 Saturday. We are early in our walk and I spy - yes I play it all day too "Racing Today" signs. Racing what around here? Why RC Cars off course. The pit tents are below of some the fifty or more teams racing.
And here's the track. If you look close you can see several in the air from going over jumps. It was great fun to watch a race.
But on to the appliance store - that has certainly be around for a while. In the showroom where many old appliances. And here is today's Blues Clues. What is this?

Clue 1 My Mother had one of these.
Clue 2 There where no pampers when these were made
Clue 3 Permanent Press had not been invented
Got it?  Good job. Yes it is what every home maker with kids wanted - a power roll ironing machine.

And for today's "I Spy", how many radios are seen here?

And the fellow didn't have the replacement ice maker - the most common one in the world, but he did a have the wiring harness that I tested as bad. YES.

So back at the boat we installed the repaired ice maker and left to tour Fort Stanwix. It is located in the center of town - because that was where it was originally. It was located at a carrrying place for those using the Mohawk river to move from the Hudson to the great lakes.

Being a Saturday, there were many folks plying the old trades that would be part of frontier life.
What is being made here? Barrels and buckets and pails. Aren't pails and buckets the same thing? Nope Pails are smaller at the top to keep things from sloshing out when carried and buckets are wide at the top to be able for animals to eat and drink from them - learn something everyday.
 Layout of the fort
Got to have baskets. Did you know that the wood ribbons come from slicing a tree into thin cross sections and then removing the narrow bands of the growth rings - and you get the strips of wood to make baskets?  Me either - clever them folk.

 Need something to eat with
 And clothes
And a hospital that doubles as bombardment shelter. Reminded me of London and WWII
The "Hospital" in one of the fort corners. A women gave birth here during a siege. Now that's tough!!
Every fort needs a draw bridge
And a counterweight system - like in the Wizard of Oz. "Oh e Oh"
Well then decided to move fifteen miles to Sylvan Beach. It is at the east end of Oneida Lakes and a fun spot to stop. It is a summer destination and it was just coming a live for the summer. Let's eat out at the Clam Haven. It was good. But guess what is not on the menu - No kidding - Clams. ?????
And we can again see the sun setting.
 And watch it.
And we found the location of the ice cream parlor. We deserve it after our long day of walking.
Bree - Nana let me have the cherry. I would have given it to you!!
 He's a happy boy!!
So I can finish my ice cream, I will say

Good Night and May God Bless
