Day 35 Lakefield to Stony Lake Sunday June 24, 2018

It was cool last night - mid fifty's - nice for sleeping Clouds remained during the day. There was the threat of showers/rain for periods during the day but we got only one sprinkle all day - not bad for a non- sunny day with forecast for some rain

If you have been looking at the map you will see that lately we have not been pushing to make distance. From here through Georgian Bay and the North Channel (in Lake Huron) we plan to "take time and smell the roses." So today was another short run of sixteen miles and one lock.

Before leaving we walked into the nice town of Lakefield. There is a nice Main Street

This old Anglican Church is a museum. It was one of the first buildings in town.

There are some very nice older homes as well.

The main reason for heading to town was to find our morning repast. And we did. A real local spot as you can see. The waitress was a big lady that looked like she had worked on a farm. She was one that if you showed her a little respect she would do anything for you, but if you didn't life would be hard and short. I took the high road and we had a wonderful time.

Our walk back was down along the waterfront. There is nice marina and walk along the water.

"What is that you say Admiral? You love to stop ever 15 feet and wait for me to take a photo?" "Yes. I thought so."

The boat is an old Johnson TriHull. When they came out in the 60's I dreamed of owning one some day. This one needs a little work.

And on the other end of the same building is today's "I Spy" something very unusual. Do you see it?

How about now. Yes it is the latest in pontoon boat design. This retro "truck on 'toons" is bound to be a hit. Son Ryan has asked that I make an offer on it for him - but his wife has vetoed the idea as she does not like the color. We can fix that don't you think? But alas, I couldn't find the owner. Maybe we can put her Escalade on one when we get home - Ryan - start measuring.

We can name it -- wait for it --------------------------------------- "Loony - 'Toons"

Back at our over night spot on the lock wall, our trusty voyager awaits. As you can see from this photo, the canal to the lock is all lined with trees. It really make you feel you are in the middle of nowhere - but town was just a stroll away.

As you can also see in the above photo, there was sun breaking through the clouds to start. But the clouds won out through the day. There was supposed to be rain at mid-day but none came. The weather radar showed just south of us had plenty of rain for the gardens.

Today's ride was one where we started to see some substantive rock formations. It was very nice. But you have to pay attention to navigation - and as a wise boating friend says "You will be fine if you keep it in the deep water" which I attempted to do and take pictures.

A drive in church!! It is on an island.

We diverted from the TSW route and went to explore Stony Lake. One of the pathways onto the lake is seen below.

There are fairly large number of cottages on the lake - some of rather modest proportions.

We traveled the nearly six miles of the lake and anchored in Quarry Bay.

And the best way to see it is from above - It still amazes me the change in perspective you get of a location from several hundred feet in the air.

And that reminds me, notice that there are a large number of evergreens here. And there was a large gathering of seagulls - yes seagulls - that makes it feel like we had entered a sister spot to the Basin back in Maine - "but Toto, we're not in Kansas any more." I have to watch that movie again - I keep getting all these flashes of dialogue.

The interesting thing is that a cloudy day brings out the detail much better than a sunny day when there are many shadow. Not a bad spot, eh?
