Day 100 Havana to Buckhorn Island Monday August 27, 2018

Day 100 Havana to Buckhorn Island Monday  August 27, 2018

The full moon was out and beautiful last night. The temperature stayed warm. The day was sunny and temperatures again rose to the low 90s with a moderate amount of humidity. The "feels like" temperature index was 106! Again!! Breezy day was relief.

Day 100!! Fun but that seems like a short or long time depending on how you look at it!!.

Today was going to be a early stop and fun day to explore the town of Beardstown. Nope didn't happen. Let's get started and I will explain.

Havana to Beardstown in only about 32 miles. So we took our time leaving from Havana - getting underway about 7:45. It was an easy ride with no locks to contend with. The river is getting more scenic and less industrial. Here are a few shots along the way. Note that it is hot and the strong breeze is fortunately at us to cool the day from the "feels like" 106 degrees (95 with humidity)

At Beardstown there is a tow barge to tie along side the cement levee wall that protects the town. There is a low side work barge that they let you tie up against for the night. Just call ahead to check for space - which I did in the morning - and call the barge crew on Channel 10 when you get there. Well, at noon we arrived and called on the radio - but the answer was "Nope no room. We may need to but barges there later today."  Great.

There are no good anchorages for a lot of miles but what are we going to do? Keep on trucking.
The next thing is the LaGrange Lock. On a positive note we drove straight into it and locked through between barges. The day was very warm but the breeze was nice.

One good thing is that we got past the Meredosia Bridge. You see two of them but if the "I Spy" fans look closely you will notice something odd about one of them.

Did you figure it out?  Outstanding. I knew you would see that the downstream bridge has no deck and is just a steel frame. They are to blast it and drop it in the river and then quickly clear the channel. But the river will be closed for a day tomorrow - so good thing we got by.

Buckhorn Island ahead. It is our stopping point for the night. It is only 1700 so time for a relaxing dinner from the barbie and enjoy the dropping temps.

Oh I forgot to tell you. Remember that breeze that was so strong? Well it ripped out two large seams in our flybridge enclosure top. Well there goes dinner.

Here is seam-stress Admiral Faye showing the crew that she is not above pitching in when it is needed. It was dark when the last panel to the enclosure was back up.

And to show that God has a sense of humor, after completing our task I happened to look and see that the next towboat coming our way was the "BIG D" - I won't go into details, but this handle has had a fun connotation in our family over the years - it made us both laugh out loud - what are the chances.  It lifted our spirits. It was even more fun that I called him to ask if we were all right where we had anchored and he replied "Oh ya, I would have to want to get ya Yer fine."

And I thought I would try to video him going by and he lit us up with his side lights - a nice way to end a long day.

So now you know it is really time to say....

Good Night and May God Bless
