Day 82 Charlevoix to Leland Thursday August 9, 2018

Day 82 Charlevoix to Leland Thursday August 9, 2018

The clouds hung on over night so much that it rained. Clouds were breaking up at sun up.  Temps were mild at 62 over night.  Winds 10 knots to start-and increase to 15 knots northwesterly then died to a whisper at early evening. High got a beautiful mid 70s when the sun shone in the clear blue sky of the afternoon.

The trip from Charlevoix to Leland was OK but the wind had stayed up more than expected and then changed direction once we were in open water.  The waves on the Great Lakes do seem to be different than on the ocean. Not sure if it is fresh versus salt, but the waves are closer together and the wave face seems steeper and they run closer together. So a little chop can be an unpleasant ride. But the waves were manageable and I adjusted the boat speed for the best ride - and I have to say my old Bayliner rides really well.

The sun gained the upper hand as we traveled the forty miles to Leland. We left the lift bridge at Charlevoix at 8:00 and arrived at Leland around 11:30. We fueled up and found our slip.

The shore of the lake is quite bold and there is some good elevation to many of the headlands. The shot below is of the approach to Leland that is between two elevated points. It was very beautiful in the now strong sun light.

The harbor is man- made at the mouth of Fish Creek (which I think was once call Carp River but Fish Creek sounded more touristy)

 Looks good, eh?

And as the place is for tourists we decided to play along. Lunch at Rick's on the Fish pier area was satisfying. And here is the fish pier area.

And there is some real fish boats still working out of here

And the old fish houses still seem to be used for commercial purposes.

There is a walkway over the dam that you can see here that let's you see straight down the harbor. It was tremendous fun to stand there and take my own pictures after looking at so many that someone else had taken. When we come to places like this I have to stop and say what a blessing it is that we have been able to have this experience of a life time. Today was one of the days that we really felt that strongly.

After lunch we enjoyed a refreshing shower and lounged on the boat for good part of the afternoon.

Then we decided to tour the shops of Main Street before getting a light dinner - the Admiral should not have to cook at all on at least some days.

We were pleasantly surprised that the shops had some things other than tee and sweat shirts - remember Mackinaw City - the tee shirt capital of the world- well Michigan anyway. We even found our refrigerator magnetic that we decided to start collecting - started in Killarney - wish we had started sooner.

The town has some nice features including this very nice overlook. The scenery is outstanding wouldn't you agree?
Well maybe outstanding if I had moved further to the left.

The headland to the south is majestic in the afternoon haze.

How did he get in the photo again.

After dinner we walked to the lake that is formed above the dam. It is a beautiful lake with a wonderful sand bottom that I think you can see in the photo.

On the way back to the boat one more stroll through the waterfront.

Love the weather vane. Trust that is not what they catch in the lake.

Will we have a long day tomorrow - we will be crossing the pond to begin our tour of the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan.

And I was able to get some sunset photos for us.

As we will try to start at 0600 I will say .......

Good Night and May God Bless
