The summer that hasn't been

This summer has continued to be just miserable along the coast. It is not much better inland but the weather along the coast has been so uninviting that we have left the dock only a few times. Below is highlights of several times that we did make it at least to Boothbay and back.

The first was when friends Jack and Lisa came for the day in mid June. At least that day had a turn for the better in the afternoon. Then in late June friends Eric and Joy joined us for several nights on the boat. In each case the weather was less than wonderful. But in both cases the time of sharing the wonders of Maine - even in non-perfect times was great. Also, it gives us reason to have them again on the boat to showcase the beauty of a real Maine summer day on the coast.

We did manage a few good days that included the July Fourth in which we made it to Boothbay for the fireworks.

The trip did start in the typical clouds and threat of showers.

Fortunately the Fourth tuned out to be a nice day - but cool for July.

We were able to get in our walk out to Spruce Point. Along the way we passed over the newly rebuilt footbridge.

It is very nice with several observation bump outs that were not part of the previous bridge. The new walkway is also wider than the previous one - another nice improvement.

The church on the hill is still being shined upon.

We were really ready to watch the fireworks. They are shot off from a barge in the harbor, We worried that fog may come in to obscure the scene but that did not happen. But something just as frustrating did happen. There was a slight breeze and it was blowing directly inline with our boat and the barge. Thus a blanket of smoke soon created an effective screen of the fireworks. The colored smoke was interesting though. It seemed fitting given the conditions of the rest of the summer.

At least the ride back the next day was pleasant.

Our next attempt at a time on the water was when granddaughters Lauren and Bree joined us on July 8.

We always have to begin with a hello to the Chief. Bree's beautiful red hair is enough to light up the foggy conditions.

And Lauren has proven once again that she is way more cute than the Chief.

Three can play that pose.

The next morning made me wonder if we would even leave the dock.

But we did. And soon my able Co-Captain was piloting the ship. She is a natural and really interested in all that is part of navigating and managing the trip.

At least we can see something.

And what would a trip to Boothbay be without ice cream. I am not sure as we didn't miss ours.

Aren't we adorable?

Being chauffeured. I could get use to this!!

We decided to drive to Moody's diner for dinner and some amazing pie.

Along the way we noticed that the Lobster that ate Woolwich had crept upon the scene.

And back to the marina - you can see for miles and miles - well maybe a mile at least.

So it is now the latter part of July. We will try to find a weather window to get down the coast. It looks possible on the extended forecast so we are hoping for some good weather. We'll see!!

So for now it is time to say Good Night and May God Bless
