Day 84 Fayette 2nd day Saturday August 11, 2018

The clear sky remained another day for a glorious day the mid 70s. A great day for Heritage Day.

We stayed the second day in Fayette to hike the several trails and to enjoy the annual Heritage Days events at the Park. It was a fine day.

We began the day with the hike of the trail around the park. The first place we stopped was the recreation of a workers house. From the sign below and several others, the neat little house of today was only like the original in shape and size. Apparently the houses were bunched together and the conditions were far less than sanitary. The only redeeming thought was they had abundant fresh water.

The trail was through very nice woods around the perimeter of the park. The forest was not overgrown and it was nice to look through the trees for some distance.

There were several areas that reminded us of home - this one like hiking parts of Harbor Island.

The trail led to the bluffs that form the entrance of the harbor. A real treat.

Back at the harbor edge we walked to the side opposite the docks.

This area contained the kilns to "cook" the hardwood  with limited air that turned it to charcoal. This was used to fire the iron furnaces.

By late morning, the folks began to arrive for the days activities

Below is a girl showing folks toys and games that kids from the time enjoyed.

This Duo - Ted and Sarah - performed old time songs including Jimmy Crack Corn, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and Clementine. They were wonderful. And singing in the Music Hall.

And this fellow was great - doing a most informative and interactive - history of the great lakes - with a strong plea to protect them for the future.

Here with the winner of the Beaver imitation contest

The rotary had a fried fish wagon and served the best fried whitefish dinner that I have had in all of the Great Lakes - and for 10 bucks with fries!! YUM

Once the day wound down it was time to fly the Mavic and get a few more shots around the harbor.
Can you tell we really thought this place was special? One of the reasons was looking at this beautiful place and realizing that it was a hard - totally un-scenic and filthy place to live -it made it a sobering place to be.

The blast furnaces and company store and warehouse.

 And from above

The Limestone headlands at the entrance to the harbor.

Looking south to where we will head tomorrow.

And a selfie for good measure, eh?

So as the sun is setting and we are thinking of getting ready to head south I will say ...........

WAIT! WAIT! what about the answer to yesterday's I Spy and Blues Clues you say? Oh I did promise didn't I.

Well, first we left our mark as "Ron and Faye" in the upper left hand side of the chalk board.

In the photo about Mrs. O and her classroom, in the upper right you will see in a column, 30 60 90. She has been adding each number for every thirty seconds that her class has not been quiet for announcements. Someone began to notice it - maybe you - and finally asked what it was for. "This is the time you were not quiet for announcements that we all needed to hear, so that is how many seconds you will sit here after the bell rings. And all your friends will have gotten the best seats on the bus." "You can't do that!" "Watch me!"  Guess what happened the next day when the announcements started.  SSSHHH Be Quiet you guys I don't want to be late again. SSSSHHHHHH. And all was quiet in Mrs. O's room.

And the Blues Clues and the two doors. The paying quests all need to use some "facilities", and since there was no running water, there needed to be "outhouses" The hotel built a two story outhouse behind the hotel and connected it with a covered walkway. And all bathrooms, need a door, eh?

And now you know "the rest of the story" (and do you know where that line comes from?)

So........

Good Night and May God Bless
