2022 Cruise Day 21 IndianTown Island to Robinhood Saturday July 30, 2022

It was a calm night. The day start cloudy, but by 9:00 am we were blessed with another wonderful summer day in Maine. It was the perfect weather to hike Indiantown Island. 

As you can see, Perelandra is resting quietly at anchor on the calm sea. 

The phrase "perspective is everything" really rings true many times - and looking out through the woods of the island makes the scene we have just viewed from the boat look completely different.

A twisted dead tree looks so gnarly. Viewing it on a moon lit night would really set the scene for a ghost story.

The trail begins on the north end of the island and ends on the south end, at the point of these next photos. The slight elevation and the framing of the scene from the trees provides another example of "perspective is everything."

And speaking of perspective, the Admiral provides a perspective of large this tree is - easily the largest we found in the forest.

And around noon it is time to mosey on to Robinhood.

Here is one of the floating house boats that Robinhood rents out. It would be great and unique way to vacation "on the water."

We have really enjoyed our extended time on the water for most of the month of July. As noted we didn't visit all our favorite places in Maine this summer - but visited some twice - by design. I am already looking forward to next year when we can see some of the old favorites that were skipped. 

We are pleased to have decided to only make one long cruise this year versus our typical two trips - one in July and one in August. We are looking forward to visiting local spots and arranging for grandchildren visits. Stay tuned for those posts.

2022 Cruise Day 19 & 20 Boothbay Harbor to IndianTown Island Thursday & Friday July 28 & 29, 2022

We have spent two terrific days in Boothbay. The weather is real summer weather with temperatures on the water of mid - 80s but with an accompanying sea breeze that has kept it wonderfully cool and comfortable. Even the threatened thunderstorms of Thursday night were only a few passing rain showers passing in the night.

On Thursday we once again took our walk to Spruce Point. Regular readers of the blog will recall from early posts this summer seeing many photos of the scenes along this walk so I will only add a select few that are hopefully different.

Well the first photo is one that demonstrates how seriously we take this walk of nearly 5 miles. As any walker worth their weight in New Balance walking shoes knows, one must have a good breakfast. Here I made sure that I was prepared for our long journey. YUM!

And along the way we passed the statue of the old fisherman. But if you look closely you will see something different ---- there are two people standing by the old man. Now that gives you some perspective of the size of this statue.

And here is a familiar shot looking out to Squirrel Island - again can you see something different?

Yup, it's that someone is sitting on the ledge in the middle of the photo.

And we did take our hike through the Spruce Point Inn forest trails. Always a short but most satisfying walk.

And today I thought I would try the breakfast at the Blue Moon Cafe. I had heard someone speak favorably about it while in line for our after dinner ice cream and I saw it featured on a New England Travel show. I had eaten there many years ago and I recall that I was not overly impressed. but my long term favorite, the Harborside, at the  west end of the footbridge, has become less focused on breakfast and I was hoping to find some thing to replace it.

As you can see it has a great location with a most enjoyable view. And I started with a freshly made blueberry muffin. It had plenty of blueberries but that was the highlight. The muffin was chewy in texture and the taste was more cookie dough like that that of a good light airy muffin.

There was a good crowd there so I had higher hopes for my home made corned beef hash with eggs. 

I am sad to report that the hash also was not as I expected. It was a very ground up concoction that was more the texture of porridge than a hash that was from diced or chopped ingredients. I was sorely disappointed. But the good part was that Faye wasn't interested in going to breakfast so the disappointment was limited to only me - and at a much reduced cost.

And I know it is in bad taste to criticize another person's boat, but I am not sure what the boat designer was thinking with this rig. It looks like two identical boats backed into each other at full speed and stuck together and as a solution they then cut of the bow of one of them to create a stern. The illusion is all the more striking when seen with the bow pointed at you so you don't see the squared off stern yet - but I wasn't quick enough with the camera.

And when we were leaving the harbor today we passed a really huge sailboat. I would say that the old fisherman seen above would even look small compared to this.

When we left Boothbay Harbor, the plan was to go to our slip at Robinhood and head to the store and tomorrow go back out for several more days. But as you can see we had such a wonderful day that we just decided to anchor at IndianTown Island instead - love being retired!!!

2022 Cruise Day 18 Warren Island to Boothbay Harbor Wednesday July 27, 2022

Today we decided to travel back to Boothbay Harbor from Warren Island. There are a lot of favorite places we skipped this year, but we felt we visited the ones we were most drawn to and that fit the weather pattern. We also will not go right back to Robinhood, but will visit some of the spots locally here that we have not been to yet this year. Remember that early boating season projects and commitments back home really limited our time on the boat early in the year.

 The trip was about 54/45 st/nautical miles

 

We started out  about 9:00. We are only traveling about 7 knots so our trip will take about 6 hours. The seas were calm and forecast to remain that way all day. One big reason to make the trip in one shot.

I decided to take the "inside" passage that goes by Port Clyde. On the way we passed my favorite tree - it is a lone tree that has been there as long as I remember - and it's still thriving - it always gives me inspiration for another year to come - I had to check to see if my friend was still there.

And about 90 minutes later we are entering Boothbay - it never gets old.

Steak on the barbie is most delicious. And what would make a great end to such a fine meal - why an ice cream of course. This is the sunset from the boat upon our return from our dessert.
