Today we rented a car to play tourist. All of the attractions are on Lookout Mountain. It is overlooking Chattanooga but you need a car to get to the attractions.
The first was the Inclined Railway. This is a railcar that climbs Lookout Mountain. It was built in 1895 for tourists and residents as well. The maximum angle of climb is 72 degrees - remember that 90 degrees is straight up!! It was fun and for me interesting for the engineering.
In the ever present gift shop Faye found these cups for Ronald and my two sons Robert and Ryan, too funny!
The next stop is Ruby Falls. It is the place that you see signs encouraging your visit in nearly everywhere for hundreds of miles away. So I was expecting something a little "over promised" but it was marvelous. Even Faye who hates tight spaces was impressed. The underground cavern runs about 2000 feet under the mountain that ends in the very impressive "Ruby Falls." Leo Lambert discovered the falls in 1928. He named the Falls after his wife Ruby.
The Falls is about 140 feet and is so interesting to see. It was really worth it.
After lunch back down the mountain, the next is Rock City. I was also expecting a rock garden filled with Gnomes - but again I underestimated what we would see. The rock formations and the paths and bridges where constructed to make a wonderful walkway through amazing cracks in the stone and amazing balanced rocks.
And there is even a waterfall.
The last stop was the National Park Service Battlefield site at the north end of the mountain that overlooks the Tennessee River. There is a visitor center that was very interesting in explaining the Civil War battle for Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga. The painting below was immense and was even accompanied by an audio that was most informative,
This is looking to the City
This was to the west looking where on the river we traveled to the City yesterday.
This plaque and the next photo are looking west where the battle for the mountain occurred as shown in the painting above.
We are back at the boat after a wonderful day - and here is the fountain at the pier where we are docked.
We are watching more football and it is now dark - so time to say ............
Good Night and May God Bless
