Day 151 Midway Marina Fulton, MS to Columbus MS Marina October 17, 2018

Heavy clouds in the morning, hints of sun and cool. At least there was not much breeze and behind us. High 58

We decided to travel another good way - 59 miles and 4 locks. There were three boats that arrived yesterday and they were leaving this morning as well. They had talked with the lockmaster yesterday and were to arrive at the Fulton lock at 8:00. We would have left earlier but joined the parade.

The lockmaster had the gates open and we all drove on in. It was the same for all the remaining locks - YES!!!

I was first, and not knowing which side the others were rigged to tie to, we went to the very first bollard. As you can see it was a little closer than I would have liked - but an inch is a good as a mile.

Here is a photo of the waterway. It was all tree lined with little development.

At the next lock I tied up one bollard back as Catalyst was tying up on the port side.

There are two more boats behind us.  The lady from Soul Time, the boat behind us, recognized the name of Perelandra as a CS Lewis book. Someday, the boat behind them has a crew that is from Adelaide Australia.

The waterway was pleasant and there were only two barges we passed and they were going upstream.  I did have to laugh when the lockmaster called the up bound tow Rhett Parker and in telling him that we were coming out of the lock, referred to us as "RVs." I have had dreams of "driving" the boat on streets, but missed the possibility of being potentially able to get into an RV park that is away from the water.

Our second tow was carrying machinery that had TVA stamped all over it. And it looked like some kind of valves or turbines - this supposition was further highlighted by General Electric being also written all over the cover.

Dead trees appear to make a great post for a navigational marker.

And here is the approach to the Columbus marina. It was a nice spot.

And here we are in our slip.

They had several courtesy cars and we got one. We found "The Grille" not far from the marina. It was a great meal for a modest price. We did ride around town. It was a nice looking town. There was a good looking downtown - even with the Walmart SuperCenter on the edge of town.

And as is natural for me, we found the rail yard. The Columbus and Greenville Railroad is apparently headquartered here. Fun to get some shots.

And following our stop, it is now dark outside and thus time to say ................

Good Night and May God Bless

  1. We went from being PCs (Pleasure Craft) in one section of the rivers to being RVs (Recreation Vessels) in another. At least we weren't called PITAs (well, out loud, at least).

    Go well,

  2. So True
You have to wonder want they think of all us old retired folks.
But they should like us as since the barge traffic is so low we make a good reason to keep the waterway open.
