Day 16 August 2019 Cruise Warren Island to Boothbay Harbor Wednesday August 28, 2019

The night was mild and breezy. The clouds dominated most of the day with some showers late afternoon and then rain.   The wind was a moderate sea breeze in the afternoon.  Temperatures in the upper 60s


We had hoped and planned to make a few stops on the way back. The weather had other ideas. The forecast called for some real heavy rain and the marine forecast showed the likelihood of strong winds and accompanying seas. To add emphasis the less than stellar forecast. the wind had been up most of the night and when it went slack, fog had come in to ensnare the world around us. We decided that the best thing to do would be to head all the way back to Boothbay Harbor.

We departed a 0630.  It was about 55 miles back to BBH and our 8.5 knot cruise would have us in the harbor shortly after noon.

I was pleased that the fog was being thinned by some sun light that was coming up and peeking under the upper clouds that were racing east to cover it. So while I needed radar for a while the visibility improved as we moved along.

Here we are leaving Warren Island. There was a windjammer schooner that anchored with us last night.

If you look close you can see the smoke from the wood stove that the cook is using to make, I am sure, a wonderful breakfast for the paying weekly patrons. You are also seeing the ferry terminal - with docked ferry for Isleboro. And as an added treat there is even Grindel Point Lighthouse to be seen.

This is looking to the east back at Warren Island to the left. You can see the fog to the right that thickened as we moved along.

After a while of motoring the fog decided to give up. It allowed us to see Owls Head below ..........

........... and get a few more photos of Owls Head Light House to add to my collection.

We are now making our way down Muscle Ridge Channel - I never tire of riding along its wonderful twists and turns. You may recall from earlier posts of the DEYC cruise that we stopped at Dix Island. It is in the distance in the center of the photo.

And coming around the corner of Ash Island.

And we have made our way to Whitehead Island at the south end of the Muscle Ridge Channel

From Whitehead we stayed outside for the nearly 30 mile stretch of the journey. The sun has been able to successfully dispatch the clouds for a while. Here we are passing Ram Island Light marking our turn toward BBH.

And we have made it once more to one of the best places on earth.

You have seen many a photo of the foot bridge and tender house - but here is one from the water. We have dinghied to the public dock here and walked to Hannaford's grocery store for some things to tide us over until we get back to Robinhood.

And back to our trusty floating home.

We were pleased to see Betsy and Richard aboard Maine Mover on the adjacent DEYC mooring. Richard was in the moving business and I always smile when I see the clever name on his boat. As faithful readers may remember, we also spent time with them this past winter in Sarasota.

We enjoyed time together and even played a few rounds of Mexican Train - but approaching rain convinced us that we needed to go early to dinner at Kaler's Seafood  if we didn't want to get rained on. But our timing was not perfect - so we got slightly damp - but the short ride allowed us to not have to sit down on the wet seats so we did well.  And once back to the boat the rain has moved in rather nicely - oh well the boat needed a rinse from the sea spray of today's ride.

The arrival of the rain was just ahead of the night deciding that it was its turn to invade our space. So after watching a few games of preseason football, it is now time to say ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
