Day 4 August 2019 Matinicus to Carvers Harbor on Vinalhaven Island Saturday August 17, 2019

Day 4 August 2019  Matinicus to Carvers Harbor on Vinalhaven Island Saturday August 17, 2019

The night was cool with fog and the sun was only able to shine a moment or two as the clouds ruled of the day along with fog that fortunately wasn't too thick. The wind was light all day.  Temperatures in the mid 60s

The day dawned slowly as the blanket of fog only allowed a grey light to overtake the night. We waited to about 9:30 and then the sun was able to brighten the day sufficiently so that we could see a reasonable distance in the fog. The photo below shows the harbor buoy as we are leaving on our 13 mile trip to Carvers Harbor on Vinalhaven Island.  In a real thick fog you have trouble seeing the front of the boat - that is no fun!

We have made it across and the fog has scaled up nicely as we approach Carver's Harbor

And we are off to explore with Scupper leading the way. Carver's Harbor is a working harbor and we are lucky to get several of only a few rental moorings.

As we walk around there is evidence in every direction that lobstering is the industry on the island.

We walked to one site of what was once the most important industry - granite quarrying.

The once deep hole from which granite was extracted for beautiful buildings around the country is now a reminder of the past and a great place to cool off in on a hot day - of which today is not one.

The natural filling of the quarry is evidence of the natural fresh water table of the island - that made it possible to get fresh water in a place that had little topsoil.

Our hike takes us back into town. There is enough summer traffic - supplied by the daily ferry service - to support restaurants and a well stocked grocery store.

And the architecture of the buildings is really interesting and attractive

This is looking out through the harbor from the upper end.

Always have thought this house would be the perfect spot to oversee the goings on of the harbor.

We decide to walk along the north side of the harbor.

Remnants of the quarry trade and the horse days.

There is Lanes Island to the east side of the harbor with a bridge from which the photo below is taken looking north.

We travel along a short ways and discovered Lanes Island conservation park. It was a wonderful walk with numerous paths.

The girls decided that they wanted to head in a different direction so Scupper, Bob and I found a great spot to sit a wait for their return.

The bench overlooks the entrance to Cavers Harbor - which we entered this morning. Open sea is to the left and the harbor to the right

There was a steady stream of lobster boats heading back in from the day - and apparently a few have also been out campaigning.

And this one is really moving right along

We found the plot of the Lane family that must be the source of the islands name.

Captain Lane had several children but none lived past 11.  As you look at the gravestones in many similar cemeteries, it seems that folks either died young or made it to a ripe old age - not many in between. Guess there is a great benefit of today's modern medicines.

Back toward town there was a beautiful home that I am glad that is being restored.

And this is a Galamander- it was used to transport the large stone cuttings from the quarries.

And the crew waiting for me to finish my picture taking.

And a Vinalhaven traffic jam - apparently the ferry just landed.

And a stone sculpture.

This looks more at home here than some of the other vehicles.

This is the high end real estate office

We ate dinner at one of the local restaurants that didn't cater to the tourists - it was good and even had pizza. A fun day - so it is time to say ................

Good Night and May God Bless
