Day 2 August 2019 Cruise Tenants Harbor to Ragged Island Thursday August 15, 2019

Day 2 August 2019 Cruise Tenants Harbor to Ragged Island Thursday August 15, 2019

The night was cool and the sun had the upper hand in the fight for space with the clouds most of the day. The wind was light all day.  Temperatures in the high 70s

Today was one of those that you dream about when thinking of cruising in Maine. Getting to go to the furthermost island that is inhabited - Ragged Island. The small village is know as CrieHaven from early settlers to the island.

The run from Tenants Harbor is a straight shot of just over 15 miles. With calm seas and mild temperatures it was a most pleasant ride.

There are several islands in the cluster of land masses that make up this remote outcropping - the other neighbor that is inhabited is Matinicus Island. And furthest to sea 6 miles beyond Ragged Island is Matinicus Rock with its lighthouse. A lonely place to keep vigil for sure - but that was in the old days of kerosene lamps and lighthouse keepers - today the light is unmanned.

In the shot below Matinicus to the left and Ragged is fainter and just off center.

Entering the harbor of Ragged Island

The fisherman here are extremely friendly - even calling us on the radio as to which of the moorings we could use as other fisherman had taken their boats into the mainland for a while.

Some may have read books by author Elisabeth Ogilvie.
See spent summers here and her books about Bennetts Island are about Ragged Island living. I have read them all and must now re-read them.

The harbor is small and looks like a post card.

Here we are going ashore for a walk and passing by the docks on the way in.

Here is the view from the rock beach at the head of the harbor.

And we are walking along the east side of the harbor with  fish houses and piers on the shore and houses just behind them.

A path leads us to the east side of the harbor and the rock beach. The mounds of rock are formed by the sea rolling the rocks up into the natural breakwater seen below. It is amazing to think of the waves being about to roll the rocks that weigh a lot in such and amazing crescent pattern it has made.

And an important means of transportation to the island is by small plane - so there is an airport.

We walked along the upland areas behind the harbor. I believe this was once the schoolhouse.

On the southeast side of the island is a beat

We gathered for dinner on Bob and Paula's boat. The sun when done as we enjoyed a  great time together.

And Scupper was as cute as ever.

The sky was clear and the color beautiful.

The harbor is amazing even in the last light.

And this is my favorite picture of the day - the beacon is even on if you look close.

So it is time to once again to say ...................

Good Night and May God Bless
