Day 3 August 2019 Ragged Island to Matinicus Friday August 16, 2019

Day 3 August 2019  Ragged Island to Matinicus Friday August 16, 2019

The night was cool and the sun had the upper hand in the fight for space with the clouds most of the day. But fog came in late in the day. The wind was light all day.  Temperatures in the high 60s

Today we traveled all of 5 miles - across to Matinicus Island. The larger sister of inhabited islands in this cluster of remote outcroppings. And Matinicus has a year round population.

This is looking across to Matinicus after just leaving Ragged Island

And this is the looking more to the right at the north end of Ragged Island and out to the the east.

Approaching the harbor on Matinicus with its breakwater in the right side of the photo.

In the harbor we turned to the left and there are rental moorings. This is looking southerly toward Wheaton Island that is on the left and Matinicus on the right.  The white house on the Wheaton Island was falling down in the mid 80s and now is restored and looks to be a very nice summer home.

Looking the other direction at the main mooring field of Matinicus.

We are off for a walk with Scupper and crew leading the way.

There is small library with a WiFi signal that Paula and I are thrilled to find - but the other halves are less than impressed (can you tell?) with this interruption of our walk.

The cemetery is an interesting walk - lots of Ames, Young and McNeil headstones

Simple New England capes seem right at home here.

Our walk takes us to the south end of the island. You can see Ragged Island to the right.

And the objective of our walk is Singing Sand Beach.  When it is hot (not today) the sand will make a squeaking sound as you walk. I heard it back in my first visit in 1986.

And the Post Office

And the school house across the street

Back at the harbor

The semi- irratated crew having to wait for Paula and I to take pictures.

And toward the afternoon fog creeps in and likely foretells of a change for the worst in the weather - but at least the wind is suppose to remain calm even if cloudy for several days.

So another fine day on the water has come to an end and it must be time to say .........

Good Night and May God Bless
