Day 345 Wye River to Chesapeake City Sunday April 28, 2019

Day 345 Wye River to Chesapeake City Sunday April 28, 2019

The night was cool and the winds of yesterday diminished overnight.  The sun was shut out this morning and didn't appear until mid-afternoon.  A few showers bounced around at noon time. Temperatures started high 50s and warmed to cool mid 60s.

We departed from our wonderful stop at the home of Dick and Phyllis at 0600. We went back down the Wye River about 7 miles. The day was cloudy with a slight breeze. The forecast was for clearing and a strong NW wind to come in with gusts to thirty knots. So we wanted to be out of the open water of the upper Chesapeake Bay by the time the gusting winds arrived.

After our trip down the river we then turned north to transit the Kent Narrows. Here we are approaching the draw bridge at Kent Narrows.

And it was great that it opens on demand!!

The channel north of the bridge has been reported very shallow but Dick said it was dredged last year.

And we had no problems getting through even at near dead low tide.

The bay, that at the mouth down at Portsmouth/Norfolk (think Navy ships), was so wide, has now narrowed down to a small river, the Elk River to be precise. A small lighthouse stands vigilant at the beginning of the river.

Looking back on our trip up the Chesapeake Bay. It was much larger than I had perceived as most of the bays back in Maine you can travel through in hours - so my perspective was predisposed to think we could do it in the snap of a finger rather than the lifetime of a small mammal.

This is an interesting photo. Do you know was it is? OK Blues Clues time.
Clue 1: We see two buoys in the water
Clue 2: We are equally spaced between the buoys.
Clue 3; The lights in the distance appear be one higher than the other?

Got it yet?

Ah, good job. It is a range marker. The two lights are some distance away and one is behind the other. When you are lined up in the center of the channel, the two lights will appear in a line. Move one side or the other and the lights will not be in a line.

Here's a think about it question. The lower light is in front of the higher one. If I moved the boat to the left will the lower light appear to the right or left of the upper light? Mark D. did you get it right?

The clouds are thinning as we make our way up the river. And we have turned from heading northerly to heading easterly. This is the start of the dug C&D Canal connecting the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays.

And about seven miles up we stop for fuel and a free dock at Chesapeake City. A very nice stop indeed. And we made better time that we expected. And the fuel was $0.60 per gallon cheaper from where I had thought we would stop.

And after we are docked it was time for a walk around this very charming town. And for future reference for all, the pink building is the ice cream shop. Wonderful ice cream and the cheapest we have seen the whole trip!! What a DAY!!

The waterfront is very old and quaint.

And the Readers Digest version of the history of the canal.

And the docks are floating as well as free!! I'll take that deal.

And there are some very nice waterfront restaurants that are busy even on a chilly day. It must be a zoo here in the summer.

And don't forget, you still need to look out for commercial traffic on the Canal.

And as you can see night has fallen but the light has not gone away. This is the Chesapeake Inn and docks are all lit up. Like I said, imagine this is one jump'n place in the summer.

With Dick and Phyllis we had some great Mexican Train games and tonight we resumed the remote games with Jim and Justin. Any guesses if the Admirals or the Captains won tonight? (But they are still ahead in games - but don't mention it)

So it has been a good day. We plan to do the Delaware Bay run to Cape May tomorrow - wish us luck and good weather.

So time to say .....................

Good Night and May God Bless
