Today we traveled about 63 miles to the Wye River and the home of Dick and Phyllis, our boat neighbors back at Longboat Key. They own the boat WYE Tug.
The forecast was for gale force wind to arrive in the afternoon and the wind in the morning was to be from the south. So I was confident that striking out into the open bay would be OK to do.
Our trip did go as I had hoped and we made it alright. The photo below after we made it to the open bay.
And a little further north was Cedar Point lighthouse. One thing that was reassuring was there were a large number of fishing boats out today - believe it is the start of Rockfish season which drew out boats in spite of the weather.
And about an hour later, here you can see the seas beginning to build.
And I was glad that visibility was still good as the ships serving the area were all still on the move. And I was pleased to have AIS so we can see the ships a long distance off and have information shown on the "closest point of approach." This makes it real easy to stay out of their way. You can see the sailboat in the picture that the ship had to call to find out if they were going to get out of the way. And they have AIS as I can see their signal as well. Why they played so close to the ship's path is a mystery to me as from the AIS info I can see that the ship is doing 17.5 knots - best to be well away from it in my opinion - as I was when I took this shot.
About half way through the trip we were able to get behind islands that knocked down the seas nicely.
And then we were able to turn and head up the Wye River. This provided a real screening against wind and waves.
And we were able to reach their house before the rains came. There were thunderstorms, but fortunately they passed to the east of us.
We made it to their dock and soon the sun came out.
But within several hours it clouded over again.
As you can see a strong squall line blew through in late afternoon. But fortunately the wind shifted to the west and we didn't get and lightning in the immediate area.
Some very nice iris plants at their home.
And across their lawn.
And their very wonderful house.
And here is Faye and Phyllis.
And as you can see night has fallen softly. The wind has shifted to the west, so
time to say .....................
Good night and May God Bless
