Day 25 Oswego Thursday June 14, 2018

Day 25 Oswego Thursday June 14, 2018

It was back to cool last night - high 50s - still just right  for sleeping.  Clouds remain from yesterday keeping temps in the 60s but still shorts but with long sleeve chamois shirt.

Day was lazy but good. We wanted to go and see Fort Ontario - but we agreed we would do laundry first. We treated ourselves to an early lunch after our laundry efforts. We found a nearby bakery/cafe. A wonderful thing, in addition to a nice lunch, was we were able to buy a fresh loaf of Cinnamon Raisin Bread - breakfast for tomorrow is set!!

Fort Ontario has been here since many years before the Revolution. It has been rebuilt numerous times and is still home to a National Guard post.
Buildings inside the Fort including ones for enlisted and those for officers.
The restoration and artifact displays were far more extensive than I would have imagined.
There were many areas, such as the mess hall, that were set up just like folks would be coming in through the door to sit down to eat or........

                      go to bed.

The Fort overlooks Lake Ontario. From the waves on the breakwater you can see why we were glad to be in port the day after the passing of the thunderstorms.
The Fort was used during World War II for a hospital and at the end of the War, it received and housed Jewish refuges. The roster of those 962 people is posted on the wall.
Many others I am sure stood in the window and gazed upon the lake and contemplated what was to come.
And in the engineers office, as he should, he had a copy of the "current" railway guide.
An impressive visit which was highlighted by the span of time it has been in place.
So as we are settling in for the night, and hoping for weather tomorrow that will enable us to cross the "pond," I will say....

Good Night and May God Bless
