Day 18 2nd day in Canajoharie NY Wednesday June 6, 2018

Day 18 2nd day in Canajoharie NY Wednesday June 6, 2018

It was cool - just right  for sleeping - last night. Mix of sun and clouds most all day. At 0600 it was 55 degrees. The day warmed up so we could don short sleeves and shorts.

We stayed in Canajoharie for the day. It was a great day to take out the folding bikes for the first time.
As you can see we selected our helmets so we would be safe and look cool. You agree correct?

And as neither of us has ridden a bike in many years, I think we did well just riding around the parking lot.

But we did even better. There is a great trail that follows the Erie Canal for most of its length. We rode the 4 miles to the next town of Fort Plain. For our efforts we decided to treat ourselves to lunch at the 5S Dinner - It is on Route 5S - creative naming, eh?
When summer arrives and cold plates are on the menu, I always am reminded of my Mother. She loved them. Well Mom, you would have enjoyed this one as much as I did.
For today's "I Spy" you need to count how many different types of cold salads I had (include the small dish to the right). And you need to look close and figure out what kind they are!!

After lunch we rode back to the boat and put away the bikes. The Arkell Museum and Library called us for a visit. It was a great display of local focused works, local artists and a nice number of Winslow Homer paintings and even some Remington sculptures. The Homer paintings were so special to us because he lived in Prouts Neck, Maine -our native home state.
The second "I Spy" is find the Town Doctor returning to his home and the school house. A doctor painted the picture of his home town.We really enjoyed all the activity and different building types captured in the painting.
We discovered that the Arkell Museum is a gift from the Arkell family. Bartlett Arkell is shown here with factory workers in white and towns people.
He was the first president of the Beech-Nut packaging company located across the street from museum. OK older crowd, how many remember the Beech-Nut brand? Below is a mural of some of the products they made.

And for those that think Hickory Farms started the Christmas gift packages, I would have to say you are incorrect. Ryan - How's one of these look for Christmas this year?
Sadly the box in the case is all that remains as BeechNut is no longer. A victim of the industrial shift that hit so many upstate NY towns and cities. This provided the answer to what the old building was that was closed and abandoned that greets you as you enter the town.
I will say that the town seems to have recovered reasonably which made our stop a very pleasant one. I would suggest stopping here to any Loopers behind us.

So as we plan to resume our journey west early in the morning, I will say,

Good Night and May God Bless
