Day 63 Killarney - 2nd day Saturday July 21, 2018

Day 63 Killarney - 2nd day Saturday July 21, 2018

The night was mild and clouds finally thickened enough for a rain shower over night. But the clouds thinned out and allowed some sun to make its way through to warm temperatures to the mid 70s. Increasing wind from the south died down early afternoon. It was a nice day - far better than we expected.

Our layover day was one of relaxation, exercise, and over indulgence. We slept in and I didn't get up until 7:30. Faye a little while later. A cloudy day seemed to turn lighter throughout the first part of the morning giving us a nice day to walk to the lighthouse that we passed coming into the harbor. There is an access road and a trail to get there. The trail is impacted by the new conference building going up at the Killarney Lodge so a walk along the roads turned out just fine. It was relatively bug free - which was much better than the trail. This is based on the description of the many bugs along the trail given to us by the young couple that we met at the lighthouse and who had just come via the trail.

The road even passed a lovely pond.

The lighthouse, while not huge by Maine's standards, was a fine light house at a fine location.

Here is the couple with Faye that I mentioned above, Francine and Claudio, from Switzerland. She had just completed her first year of teaching seventh graders, and he was studying and apprenticing to be an architect. They were on a road trip that started in Boston and when through NH. They likely drove nearly past our house on way to White Mountain. Their road trip will finish in Chicago. Great to meet and talk with them. Wonderful to encounter young people that give us old folks a confidence in the future for our grandkids.

And the old folks - but they are wonderful old folks, eh?

On the way back we stopped at the old jail house that housed paintings and art by
Pierre AJ Sabourin. Check out this link to read about a very interesting fellow who we enjoyed meeting.
We purchased some small prints for a place on the boat that needed some art. A great added attraction to our stay here in Killarney.

Now you may say gazing at the photos, "What is this about?"

Well out in the bay on the approach to Collins Inlet we saw the boat below out in open water. It is a strange looking thing from any angle - based on all fishing vessels that I have seen. It docks at Herbert Fisheries and apparently is the source for the famous fish and chips.

I saw it go by our dock in the afternoon and saw it tied up at their dock. Here are pictures of the inside. It seems to be a floating fish factory. They use gill nets hung from the stern that come over the large pulley and the men can empty the net inside the boat.

The winch below is used to haul the nets into the boat. It is located in the bow of the ship.
 Buckets of nets.

So following a fine dinner at the Killarney Lodge served by a very nice and competent young lady named Teresa (our second encounter of the day with some fine young people), we returned to the boat to try to settle our full bellies before sleeping.

So it is time to say .......

Good Night and May God Bless
